Two schools in Bonnievale and seventeen Voluntary Lifesaving Clubs in the greater Cape Town region have welcomed a sporting goods donation from local sports marketing agency, Stillwater Sports Management.

“We are proud to be able to support local communities and are really happy that the excess event goods can be put to good use,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports Management.  “Our donations usually consist of a combination of product including t-shirts, caps, swim caps, water bottles, shoelaces and drawstring bags.  Each item is brand new (never been used).  The items can no longer be used at our events either due to logo changes or updated colour schemes.  It gives us great pleasure knowing that the schools and lifesaving services are putting the goods to great use.”

Liezel Wessels accepted the donation on behalf of Welville Primary School and Bonnievale High School.  Wessels assists with coaching at Bonnievale High School, while at the Welville Primary School she is involved with the cultivation of one hectare of vineyards.

“I try to motivate the children to partake in sport,” says Wessels.  “The donation was really well received, especially the swimming caps.  A lot of the children now have the opportunity to learn to swim.  Learners only have access to the swimming pool if they have a swim cap.  A lot of learners, however, could not afford a swim cap.  Because the Breede River runs through Bonnievale, a big focus is placed on water skill and safety.  There is also a channel on the farms, so by ensuring that the children have the necessary water safety skills we could possibly save a life.  Swimming is also a skill that they can use for the rest of their lives.”

“A lot of the children don’t have clothes in which they can practise sport in the afternoon,” continues Wessels.  “We’ve given the event t-shirts to these children.  Hopefully this will motivate even more children to partake in sport.  Sport has a way of improving one’s self-esteem.  It also teaches children to persevere in all that they do and that a lot of things in life is possible if you work hard.  We are truly thankful to Stillwater Sports Management for the support.”

The former President of Western Province Lifesaving, Jurie Wessels has been involved with Lifesaving for over 50 years having served on Committees at Club, Provincial and National level.  “Lifesaving is a voluntary community service,” says Wessels.  “I’m a Life Member of Strand Surf Lifesaving Club (LSC).  The product received from Stillwater Sports Management has been shared between seventeen clubs from Kogel Bay in the east, Strand, all around False Bay up to Fish Hoek. Then on the Atlantic Coast from Llandudno to Big Bay at Blaauwberg.  Club members are drawn from various communities, some very disadvantaged.  The gear will help them perform their duties more comfortably.”
