Grabouw (Western Cape) – The second annual Sanlam Cape Mile has attracted the attention of a number of top local and international triathletes including the likes of Marie Rabie (South African Olympian), Lisa Nordén (Swedish Olympic silver medalist 2012), Jodie Stimpson (British 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist) and Flora Duffy (Bermudan Olympian/reigning XTERRA World and XTERRA South African Champion).
“The Sanlam Cape Mile offers triathletes the perfect opportunity to compete against elite swimmers,” says Rabie. “I took part in the inaugural event in 2015 and absolutely loved it. It is the best open water mile that I’ve ever competed at. The environment, friendly faces, good organization and of course the vibe makes this event really special.”
According to Nordén, after training in the pool all winter she is looking forward to getting back into a race environment. “The mass start forces you to think and position yourself wisely. Taking part in a ‘single disciplined’ event also helps a lot with fitness. Compared to training, racing is always going to be that notch harder. This is the best possible way to raise the bar and get used to the intensity of racing.”
“Being from the UK, the opportunity to race in open water is a rare occurrence for me,” says Stimpson. “The Sanlam Cape Mile looks like a pretty cool race. Although my goal will be to see how long I can hold onto the fast swimmers, I will also focus on practicing my open water skills as we seldom get the opportunity to do so in a race environment.”
For Duffy the Sanlam Cape Mile is perfect preparation for the Fedhealth XTERRA Grabouw. “I have fond memories of Grabouw because of XTERRA South Africa. The area is really pretty. Having the opportunity to take part in another race there makes it really special. I’ll ride the mountain bike course after the swim, which makes it a great training day for me. It is always good to be able to gain some course knowledge prior to XTERRA Grabouw.”
Taking place at the Eikenhof Dam, Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape) on Sunday, 07 February 2016, the Sanlam Cape Mile is an exciting open water swim. Entrants can choose between an exhilarating mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.
