Ten XTERRA SA hopefuls will proudly fly the flag on Sunday, 29 October 2017 when they line up to take on the world’s best at the XTERRA World Championship in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.

All eyes will be on the Elite Men’s race where SA’s golden boy, Bradley Weiss (Stellenbosch), will be gunning to make his mark.  “This will be the third time that I race at the XTERRA World Championship,” says Weiss.  “I competed in my first XTERRA in 2011 and went to the World Championship for the first time in 2014.  There have been many highlights throughout my triathlon career, but my two proudest achievements would be winning our National XTERRA SA Title in 2016 and winning the XTERRA European Final in Denmark earlier this year.”

“I am hoping to execute the race that I know I am capable of,” continues Weiss.  “I feel I have paid my dues at this stage and have the necessary experience not to make the same mistakes.  If I can cross the finish line knowing that I have executed my best race I will be very satisfied. The competitive nature of this race is second to none. I love how close the battle is each year.  My goal is and always has been to win.”

Other XTERRA SA Warriors that will battle it out on route will include:  Gary Thomas (19-24 age group), Chris Visser (19-24 age group),  Martin Havenga (25-29 age group), Zane Coetzee (25 – 29 age group), Sylvia van Tromp (35-39 age group), Frederic Magnin (40-44 age group), Brenton Ashby (45-49 age group), Sean David McCarthy (50-54 age group) and Jacobus Verster (60-64 age group).

“I love taking part in any outdoor activity,” says van Tromp (Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng).  “XTERRA allows me to see South Africa and explore the world.  I am proudly South African.  I hope to enjoy every minute at the XTERRA World Championship.   My goal is to podium in my age group.”

For Ashby (Hout Bay, Cape Town) it’s an honour to represent South Africa at the World Championship.  “This will be my first time competing at the World Championship, but hopefully not my last.  I’m motivated to do my absolute best on the day.”

“I enjoy XTERRA because it’s a lovely challenge,” says McCarthy (Parklands, Cape Town).  “I competed in my first XTERRA Full this year and placed 2nd in my age group.  I am proud to represent my country and am hoping for a podium finish.”

Verster (Pretoria) competed in his first XTERRA at the age of 40.  “The combination of exercise, nature and endorphins make me feel alive,” says Verster.  “This will be the first time that I go to the World Championship.  I am very proud.  My goal is to finish with a smile and tick this box on my bucket list.”
