SA’S newly crowned 10km Record Holder, Precious Mashele and Uganda’s teen sensation, Prisca Chesang will spearhead the 8th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that will take place in the Mother City on Sunday 14 May 2023.
Mashele delivered fireworks in Gqeberha on 02 April at the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K, when he broke the 8-year-old SA 10km Record, clocking 27:35, to take three seconds off the previous record held by Stephen Mokoka.
Now Mashele is back for the second leg in the Series, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K on Sunday 14 April. And the newly crowned SA Record Holder is bullish about his expectations. “I want to go faster,” said the 32-year-old Boxer Athletics Club athlete.
It is a deep field that will line up on Sunday 14 May boasting three of South Africa’s fastest ever 10km runners. Joining Mashele are Thabang Mosiako and Mbuleli Mathanga, and with this trio lining up, a fast race is guaranteed.
Mosiako took a whopping 34 seconds off his previous best in finishing third at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K and clocking 27:52 for the 4th fastest time run by a South African. Mathanga was 7th across the line in that race and came within a whisker of breaking his PB of 28:03, crossing the line in 28:08. Mathanga is desperate to join the sub 28 club that is presently occupied by Mashele, Mokoka, Shadrack Hoff (27:50 – 2002), Mosiako and Maxime Chaumeton (27:58 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K, 2022) and in Cape Town he will have the perfect opportunity.
Kenya’s Denis Kipngetich and Uganda’s Denis Cherotich have been added to the mix, and with the front running, aggressive style displayed by these two athletes, the South African contingent will need to stay on their toes if they do not wish their thunder to be stolen from them. Kipngetich boasts a 10km best of 28:56 run in Herzogenaurach, Germany this year. A steeplechaser who has made the move to the roads, Kipngetich is still a youngster at 21 years of age. Cherotich has never run outside of Uganda, so the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K will be new territory for him and with a best of 29:50 in the rarefied air of Kampala (1200m) and in a stacked field, he could well upset the apple cart.
Prisca Chesang is the favourite in the Elite Women’s Race with her 30:19 run in Madrid in 2022. The 19-year-old will be sure to set a blistering pace come race day. Diana Chesang of Kenya is back for her third stab at a win at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series after finishing second in Durban in 2022 (31:55 – PB) and 7th in Gqeberha (33:38). South Africa’s Glenrose Xaba has her eyes set on finally cracking that 32 minute mark after her PB in Gqeberha, 32:23, taking 22 seconds off her previous best. Throw in the mix Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala and a resurgent Cacisile Sosibo and you have a Battle Royale waiting to happen.
“The Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series strives to attract the world’s best athletes to South Africa to race against our stars,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Series. “Prisca, having run 30:19 at the Madrid 10km over New Year, will be one of the fastest ever women to race over 10k in South Africa. It is important that we show Africa excellence in women’s running and we are excited to do so in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K. We are also proud to see Precious use the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series to improve his performance and ultimately become the fastest ever South African runner over 10km. This is what we want the series to do for South African road running performances. We would like to wish all runners, elite and social, all the best for Sunday. We can’t wait to celebrate the sport and Mother’s Day with you in the Mother City.”
