North West Province – Celebrating its 18th anniversary at the ATKV Buffelspoort on Saturday 05 June 2021, the Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic is set to live up to its reputation!
Consisting of a Marathon (+-65km), Half Marathon (+-33km), Fun Ride (15km) and a Kids Event (2.5km) that showcases the Magaliesberg’s most spectacular routes, the Fedhealth Magalies Monster MTB Classic caters for mountain bikers of all ages and capabilities. The Marathon, Half Marathon and Fun Ride will include gravel roads, jeep track, rocky single track, soft sand, technical climbs and descents.
“The most revered of the four events, the Marathon is suited to the more experienced and fit mountain biker,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Entrants will face the iconic ‘Monster Climb’ that is on the Maanhaarrand Pass road and goes all the way up to the highest point on Breedts Nek. There will be a few river crossings with one or two portage sections. This event should not be under-estimated and should not be compared to other events of similar distances. Ride within your own technical ability and rather get off of your bike if you do not feel comfortable going down or up technical sections. Remember to give way to passing riders.”
“The Half Marathon is unique, as it is a great opportunity for younger riders to race each other in a highly competitive environment, but it is also the perfect route for newcomers to the sport,” confirms Meyer. “Approximately 70% of the route is very ridable and non-technical. There are however some parts that will remind riders that this is the Magalies Monster. This year Half Marathon riders will be treated to a ‘mini’ Monster Climb. The ascent is shorter, but steeper than the original Monster Climb (featured in the Marathon). The Mini Monster Climb will be a real test as it is steep and rocky. Once at the top, entrants will find themselves on a beautiful indigenous bushveld plateau. This route goes up an exceptionally beautiful section of the Buffelspoort Valley and will boast a few river crossings with one or two portage sections. Have fun and enjoy the race.”
“The Fun Ride is the ideal opportunity for younger riders to be part of the Fedhealth Magalies Monster,” continues Meyer. “Nearly half of the route will consist of farming jeep tracks in and around Citrus, Blue Berry and Cherry Orchards. These sections are fast and non-technical. Mountain bikers will get to ride in a beautiful indigenous bushveld forest that is easy to negotiate and perfect for new riders entering the sport of mountain biking or for the whole family to take part together. There is one steep concrete climb that younger athletes might not be able to cycle up, but it is not technical and easy to walk. For the rest, the route is fun and fast! Irrespective of which event is entered, mountain bikers can look forward to a fantastic day out on the trails.”
