The streets of Durban will be buzzing with music and dance on Sunday, 14 October 2018 when the City’s leading performing arts groups gather to entertain (and motivate) thousands of runners as they take on the 2nd annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN.
Performing arts groups to look out for on route will include the: Durban Girls’ High Majorettes, Durban Regiment Pipe Band, African Siziwe Performers, Inanda Seminary School, Westville Girls High Marimba Band and Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers.
“This will be the second time that the Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers perform at the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN,” says David Gouldie, Amabhubesi Zulu Dance Group. “All our members reside in Umlazi, a township on the east coast of KZN. Being part of this event is a great opportunity for us. We are excited to showcase our talents while motivating runners. Seeing all the winners (every runner is a winner) cross the finish line is a memorable experience.”
“The Durban Girls’ High Majorettes consists of high school learners,” says Mr Keith Alho, Durban Girls’ High Majorettes Trainer. “Performing at the inaugural event in 2017 was an amazing experience for our team. The girls really enjoyed cheering for the runners (and walkers) as they passed our station. We are really excited to be back this year. Runners, walkers and spectators can look forward to seeing the majorettes dressed up in their majorette uniforms, performing with a variety of props as they create a fun and vibrant vibe.”
According to Ken Mustard, Pipe Major Durban Regiment Pipe Band, the band was started in 1961. “Our youngest member is 16 years of age, while our oldest member is 83. We really enjoyed performing at the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN in 2017. The event gave us the opportunity to perform bagpipe music for the public. We found that as the runners ran past our station they still had enough energy to give us a cheer, while some actually stopped to take selfies. We are looking forward to receiving more cheers from the runners this year. Entertainers thrive on applause.”
