The FNB Run Your City Series has extended its African footprint with the introduction of the FNB MAPUTO 10K CITYRUN that will take place on Maputo City Day, Sunday 10 November.

Promoted by the Municipal Council and FNB, the FNB MAPUTO 10K CITYRUN will offer participants a unique opportunity to cross the Maputo-Katembe bridge on foot.

The race, in which elite international athletes, Mozambican athletes and lovers of the sport of road running in general will all take part, was announced at an event that took place this week at the Maputo Municipal Council building, and was attended by representatives from the Municipal Council, FNB, the Athletics Federation, Stillwater Sports, the press and other partners.

As with its sister events in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, the FNB MAPUTO 10K CITYRUN race route is designed to take participants along the historic and iconic routes around each city, thereby adding a touristic element to it and making it more than a race, an economic opportunity for every community it passes through.

With a 10km flat course, the race will start at the Katembe Municipal Building and will offer participants the opportunity to enjoy the landscape of Maputo city, passing by the iconic Tunduru Botanical Gardens, before the finish at Independence Square.

“We believe that this event, within the celebrations of Maputo City Day which is celebrated on November 10th, will hugely benefit Maputo City, putting it on the circuit of cities with regular international events, attracting tourists, giving runners an opportunity to see international athletes up close and, above all, projecting the city’s name across the country and beyond its borders,” Dr Alice Abreu, the Councillor for Health and Social Action at Maputo City Council said.

“As part of FirstRand Group, the biggest financial group in Africa by market capitalization, FNB’s vision for the continent in general and for Mozambique in particular, goes far beyond providing excellent financial services. Our slogan “How can we help you” reflects our genuine commitment to help improve the lives of the communities in which we operate. This race is part of this commitment and is part of a set of initiatives that FNB is carrying out in the process of transformation and repositioning to be an increasingly relevant partner in the Mozambican market,” Paulo Pereira, Deputy CEO of FNB said at the race launch.

FNB Mozambique – as a sponsor, in partnership with Maputo City Council and Stillwater Sports is guaranteeing technical organization and logistical support. The execution of the race is also in partnership with the National Roads Administration (ANE), Ports of Maputo and the Athletics Federation in Maputo.

“We are both excited and proud to take the FNB Run Your City Series to Maputo,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports. “Following in the footsteps of the current events in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban the FNB Maputo 10K CITYRUN will be an exhilarating mass participation road race that will celebrate the splendour of the city of Maputo. Runners (and walkers) will be treated to a journey that will highlight the iconic Maputo–Katembe bridge as well as many other beautiful landmarks in Maputo.”

The route promises to be lined with festive and exciting experiences that will make this a unique event to experience.

“Over the short period of 5 years, the FNB Run Your City Series has grown to over 40 000 runners in the three cities,” continues Meyer.  “Two of the events have attained IAAF Bronze Label Status (Cape Town and Durban), with the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN now chasing Gold Label Status.  The FNB Run Your City Series attracts some of the best athletes in the world, resulting in fast times being recorded on the African Continent.  We cannot wait for these fast times to be recorded in Maputo.”

“Africa is the home of the world’s fastest athletes, and it is logical that Africa should stage the fastest and most exciting running events in the world. The FNB Run Your City Series does that, whilst encouraging a healthy lifestyle and placing focus on inner city rejuvenation.  The local organisers can’t wait to welcome many thousands of runners to this most exhilarating event!”
