Celebrating its 3rd anniversary on Sunday 13 October 2019, the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN will boast live performances from a host of Durban’s leading performing arts groups including the: Durban Girls High Majorettes, Durban Regiment Pipe Band, Inanda Seminary Steel Drum Band, Westville Girls High School Marimba Band, African Siziwe Performers and Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers.
“We are honoured to be recognized as part of the event,” says Fred Schoon, Chairman Durban Girls’ High Majorettes. “The FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN has become a Durban tradition. The Majorettes love feeling as if they are part of the event. They are always astounded at the number of runners on the road and feel very special when runners stop and ask for photographs with them. This year we will include our own competition music, while extra flags and street march props will add some variation. The runners can look forward to seeing majorettes on both sides of the road, cheering them on.”
“Membership of the Durban Regiment Pipe Band is open to anyone who is interested in highland bagpiping and drumming,” says Ken Mustard, Pipe Major Durban Regiment Pipe Band. “Our youngest member is 17 while our oldest member is 83. It is great to take part in such a landmark event. Runners really appreciate our music as they go past. They often applaud or cheer for us despite running low on breath. In addition to giving us exposure, the event also grants us the opportunity to play to an appreciative audience. We look forward to witnessing the response from runners. As with any musical group the audience response makes the musicians feel good.”
“We have been playing steel drums, marimbas and other musical instruments for over 10 years,” says Bryan Clarke, Inanda Seminary Steel Drum Band. “Our main goal is to have a lot of fun. It is always great to get a chance to showcase our talents. This will be the second year that we perform at the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN. The atmosphere at the event is great. This year we will be playing steel drums. The vibe will be electric and we hope to encourage and motivate all runners as they come past.”
“Our band is super excited to play at the 2019 FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN,” says Jenna Morgan, Band Member Westville Girls High School Griffin Girls. “Our girls feel great knowing that we can add to the upbeat vibe that the event creates for the runners. It’s so rewarding to see runners being energized by our music. By being part of the event we are given the opportunity to prepare for our National performance in September. It boosts the girls’ confidence playing for such a large audience. Runners can look forward to a lot of energy, smiles and good vibes.”
“This will be the third time that the Amabhubesi Zulu Dancers perform at the FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN,” says David Gouldie, Amabhubesi Zulu Dance Group. “All our members reside in Umlazi, a township on the east coast of KZN. Being part of this event is a great opportunity for us. We are excited to showcase our talents while motivating runners. Seeing all the winners (every runner is a winner) cross the finish line is a memorable experience. We look forward to welcoming them home on the day.”
