Embrace your running power and be a #ForceForGood at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K ‘City Clean-Up’!

Durban residents are invited to be part of a rewarding Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K ‘City Clean-Up’ on Saturday, 8 July 2023 starting at Absa DURBAN CITY (291 Anton Lembede Street, Durban) at 08:30.

Highlighting the multi-faceted nature of the ‘City Clean-Up’, Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series says, “Beyond being a fun gathering that brings together residents, runners, and walkers, the ‘City Clean-Up’ also serves as a catalyst for community-driven goodness. We invite all residents to unite in elevating the city of Durban’s radiance in preparation for the 6th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K. With an impressive elite racing component, this mass participation road race showcases Durban’s splendour, vibrant atmosphere, and its incredible people.”

In closing Meyer adds: “We would like to thank Absa who will be providing delicious breakfast packs to all the dedicated volunteers upon completion of the ‘City Clean-Up’. We are also thankful to PETCO for their invaluable support and generous donation of gloves and refuse bags. Every contribution makes a difference. We can’t wait to join forces with Durban residents on Saturday, July 8th, as we unite to prepare Durban to shine brightly on Sunday during the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K.”

“Part of Absa’s strategic intent is being an active force for good in the communities that we operate in, and this includes keeping our cities clean. With the city clean-up, our colleagues and community members come out in numbers to assist as we prepare for race day. This is what being a force for good stands for, unity and collaboration. The spirit of ubuntu,” says Sydney Mbhele, Absa’s Group Chief Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer.

PETCO is a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) that administers Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes on behalf of its members for various packaging material streams in order to build a circular economy and lead producer responsibility in South Africa.

“Engaging in initiatives like the city clean-up allows PETCO to actively participate in consumer and civic responsibility,” highlights Kara Levy, PETCO Marketing Manager. “Packaging impacts all of us, whether directly or indirectly, and it is crucial that we unite in embracing true sustainability whenever opportunities like this clean-up arise. Each of us plays a vital role in transitioning South Africa from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring the diversion of valuable resources, such as PET bottles or liquid board cartons, from landfills and towards recycling. We are proud to support the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K ‘City Clean-Up’ by sponsoring gloves and clear plastic bags for the volunteers. These plastic bags are made from recycled materials and are recyclable, facilitating easy sorting of litter and responsible recycling of the collected materials.”
