Western Cape – The 2016 Fedhealth XTERRA Lite in Grabouw saw an impressive field of multi-sport enthusiasts put on their swim caps, rack their mountain bikes and lace up their trail running shoes to partake in what has become South Africa’s premier off-road triathlon.

Competition was rife in the men’s race with young South African hopefuls having to contend with the likes of Frenchman Brice Daubord and Swiss triathlete Jan Pyott.

Daubord set the pace in the men’s race claiming a deserving victory in a lightning fast time of 01 hour 09 minutes 17 seconds. “My goal was to win the Ultimate Warrior Challenge by taking part in both the XTERRA Full and XTERRA Lite races over the weekend, but unfortunately due to a bicycle mechanical, I was unable to finish the XTERRA Full yesterday,” says Daubord. “The XTERRA Lite route was really nice. I had to win today, I had no excuses.   One word sums up XTERRA South Africa and that is wow.” Jean-Paul Burger came in second, while Jan Pyott (Switzerland) finished third.

Reigning Fedhealth XTERRA Lite Grabouw Champion, Hayley Preen successfully defended her title in an impressive time of 01 hour 23 minutes 33 seconds. “I love XTERRA, this is my favourite event,” says a delighted Preen. “The swim was tough, but I had a good mountain bike and run. I actually started racing the XTERRA Lite as part of a team. I took part in the XTERRA Full yesterday as part of a team. We placed first in our category. The XTERRA is a great day out for the whole family.” Vicky van der Merwe came in second, while Mikaela Jonsson finished third.

“People often think that in order to take part in fitness events or races they need to be seriously fit. That’s the beauty of our XTERRA Lite events: they don’t require an advanced fitness level of any kind, so they are accessible to the average healthy person. And, since one can enter in teams, these events provide a wonderful opportunity for a group of friends or couples to get moving together,” says Jeremy Yatt, Principal Officer of Fedhealth.

Exciting News:

After a gruelling day out on route, XTERRA Warriors could look forward to recovering in the NUUN Recovery Zone. “We were there to put back what the race took out with cold coolers of our proprietary blend of electrolytes in natural, delicious flavours – all without any sugars,” says Etienne du Plessis, CEO of NUUN.

Another special feature that XTERRA Warriors could look forward to in the NUUN Recovery Zone was the serving of the proudly South African ButtaNutt series of authentic tree nut spreads. “Our spreads are filled with healthy fats and proteins for sustained energy.  ButtaNutt also gave away an entire year’s supply to one lucky XTERRA finisher at each of the three events,” says Antoine van Heerden, Managing Director of ButtaNutt.
