The City of Joburg will celebrate National Heritage Day amongst thousands of runners and walkers at the 4th annual FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN on Tuesday 24 September 2019.
“We are proud to have the City of Joburg as a partner of the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN,” says Dezroy Poole, Director Stillwater Sports. “Starting in front of FNB Bank City, the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN celebrates the City Of Gold’s rich heritage. Runners (and walkers) will be treated to a 10km journey that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature lively performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups. Hosting a mass participation road run in the city centre is a massive undertaking. The City of Joburg assists in alleviating pressure by granting the event access to an abundance of services including logistics, venues, safety and security to name just a few. We truly value the positive impact that the City Of Joburg has on the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN and cannot wait to host a memorable event on National Heritage Day on 24 September.”
According to Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba, City of Joburg Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, the City’s mandate to promote a better quality life for Joburg citizens starts by being fit and healthy. “The FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN speaks to this mandate as the event gives Joburg residents the opportunity to participate in a world-class event on home soil,” says MMC Sifumba. “The event further boosts sports tourism in the inner city of Joburg, while highlighting the fact that the City of Joburg is progressive, easily accessible and safe to visit. Our main goal is to bring sport opportunities to the people, encouraging citizens to be active and to further experience the inner-city of Joburg with its rich history and landmark sites. The FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN has a spectacular track record and the City of Joburg is proud to be associated with an event of this nature.”
Historic landmarks to look out for on event day will include:
- Museum Africa: Housed in a building that was once the city’s fruit and vegetable market dating from 1913.
- Mary Fitzgerald Square: The Square was originally a wagon site on which many striker’s meetings were held.
- Braamfontein Cemetery: Johannesburg’s oldest cemetery, dating from 1888. Enoch Sontonga, composer of the national anthem Nkosi Sikelil’ Afrika, lies buried here. His grave is marked by a giant granite block.
- Constitution Hill: The site of Johannesburg’s notorious Old Fort Prison Complex, commonly known as number 4, where thousands of ordinary people were imprisoned. Many of South Africa’s leading political activists, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, were imprisoned there.
