Runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts will find their fit at the second annual Cell C Day Of Races in Johannesburg (Roosevelt High School, Emmarentia) on Sunday, 11 June 2017.
The theme of the event is ‘find your fit’. Entrants can choose between 4 exciting start waves: 1. Pretty Fast, 2. Sole Mates (pairs), 3. Young, Fast & Free and 4.Anything Goes. The 5th wave, the Elite Race is for invited athletes only. Although each wave is a source of excitement, the Elite Race is definitely a wave not to be missed.
In 2016 Mbongeni Ngxazoza was the runner to beat in the men’s Elite Race. Taking the lead at the 2km mark, Ngxazoza completed the 5km race in a lightning fast time of 13 minutes 59 seconds. “The course was just right,” said a very happy Ngxazoza. “I used to run 5000m on the track, but now my focus is on marathon and half marathon distances. I was very impressed with the organisation of the Cell C Day of Races. It was definitely on par with the big international races that I’ve competed at.”
Lebogang Phalula’s valiant effort secured her the top spot on the podium in the women’s Elite Race in 2016. “I really enjoyed the race,” said Phalula. “The benefit of a 5km race is that it helps us ladies improve our speed. I wish that there were more 5km races that we could compete at.”
