Capetonians invited to join a fun City Clean Up in the prelude to the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K

The organisers of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series are inviting Capetonians to a rewarding ‘City Clean Up’ on Saturday 14 May 2022. Starting at the Absa Building in Lower Long Street at 07:00, the aim is to help get the streets of the Mother City ready for the 7th annual Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K that will take place on Sunday (15 May).

“A proudly South African mass participation road run, the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K encapsulates the splendour of the Mother City, the vibe and its people,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series. “We would like to invite all Capetonians to help us keep the city clean before, during and after hosting Cape Town’s most iconic 10km road race. The City Clean Up really is a fun way for everybody to get involved and help make a difference. We are excited to continue our partnership with PETCO and look forward to catching up with proud Capetonians on Saturday at the 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up.”

PETCO is South Africa’s national industry body that is accountable for managing the PET plastic industry’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

“PETCO is excited to be involved with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up initiative,” says Kara Levy, PETCO Marketing Officer. “These types of initiatives allow us to move off the side-lines and into the thick of consumer and civic responsibility. Plastic touches us all, whether directly or indirectly, and it is imperative that we come together to be part of true sustainability when the opportunity (such as this clean-up) presents itself. We all have an important role to play in shifting South Africa away from a ‘take-make-dispose’ system to a circular economy by ensuring that valuable resources, such as PET plastic bottles, are diverted from landfill and collected for recycling.  It is also important to raise awareness around responsible disposal of valuable recyclable materials which can be made into many useful things.”

“The important message that we would like to share is that there is no such thing as ‘away’,” continues Levy. “When we throw anything away it must go somewhere. A recent warning from the waste management industry stated that SA’s landfills are nearing ‘Day Zero’. As Capetonians, we understand only too well what that means, as we experienced the same warning with our water shortage. Capetonians can contribute positively by starting to separate their recyclables from their waste, like food waste and taking them to a drop-off site or leaving them in a clear bag for collectors on municipal collection day. This will help provide collectors with an income, while decreasing the filling of landfills with valuable recyclable materials.”

In support of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up, PETCO will sponsor gloves to protect those cleaning up and clear plastic bags made from recycled plastic (and are recyclable). This will ensure that the valuable recyclables and the litter will be easy to sort, and the recyclables can be responsibly taken to be recycled. Event Partner, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, will supply soft drinks for all Capetonians that participate in the  Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K City Clean Up on Saturday.

“In conjunction with the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K event organisers, partners and sponsors, we have embarked on a journey to reduce the usage of plastic at the event, including the race route at the hydration stations, by introducing cups for the products used to hydrate the runners,” says Dan Davis, Commercial Activations Lead Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages. “As Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages, we are committed to creating a World Without Waste by reducing waste not only at the events and activations we are associated with, but also across our everyday business operations. Our purpose is to refresh the world and make a difference. We aim to create this through a more sustainable business and a better shared future, for our people and the communities we operate in.”
