The FNB Run Your City Series (RYCS) has received a major coup with the announcement that the athletes from the Boxer Athletics Club will be participating in the FNB RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run on Thursday 24 September 2020.

“The Boxer Athletics Club has become the preeminent club for SA’s greatest middle-distance athletes,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports.  “Including the likes of Elroy Gelant, Stephen Mokoka, Glenrose Xaba and Tanith Maxwell, when you see an athlete toe the line dressed in the striking Boxer red, black and white colours, you know that the race is on.  We are excited to see the Boxer athletes in action on National Heritage Day when they take on the Virtual Run.”

“The Boxer Athletics Club has enjoyed many years of successful participation in the FNB RYCS events.  Our runners are eagerly counting down the days to the Heritage Day Virtual Run.  It’s given them a sense of purpose again after the hard lockdown period.  Hopefully everything will return to normal in 2021 and we’ll be able to dominate the start line of the RYCS in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg,” said Boxer Athletics Club Chairman Andrew Mills.

Boxer Athletics Club athletes that will be seen in action on the day will include (but are not limited to):  Glenrose Xaba, Tanith Maxwell, Lebo Phalula, Lebogang Phalula, Cherise Carreira (Sims), Elroy Gelant and Stephen Mokoka.

“I can’t wait to be part of the FNB RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run on 24 September,” says Glenrose Xaba.  “It’s really nice to have something to train for again.  I am looking forward to feeling the race day jitters, even though it’s a virtual run.”

“As a Boxer Athlete I am really excited to be part of the FNB RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run,” says Tanith Maxwell.  “We’ve all been in limbo for the past couple of months, not focussing on racing but still going through the motions of training.  It’s great to have something to focus on and work towards.”

According to Elroy Gelant, the FNB RYCS provides athletes with the platform to compete against world class athletes.  “Because of COVID-19 and the lockdown period, there hasn’t been any races for athletes to participate in.  The RYCS Heritage Day Virtual Run is a great initiative.  Athletes all around the country can take part.  My goal is to secure a Top Three finish and also run a good time in the 5k (referring to the Friday 5K Solo Run Series powered by PUMA).  I look forward to seeing everyone on the road on 24 September when we celebrate our culture and heritage together.”
