Although diagnosed with a heart defect at the age of two, Nathan Botha, a 16 year old mountain biking enthusiast from Hoërskool Florida (Roodepoort) will be back in action at the 2019 FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic. This year however he will share the experience with friends from school.
In 2005 Nathan was diagnosed with Coarctation of the Aorta, a congenital heart defect involving a narrowing of the aorta. This narrowing restricts the amount of oxygen-rich blood that can travel to the lower part of the body.
According to Nathan’s mother, Amanda Botha, the same week of diagnosis, Nathan underwent a four-hour operation to repair the coarctation. “He was placed on blood pressure medication for one year to stabilise the blood flow in the repaired aorta. He has since been going to the paediatric cardiologist for annual check- ups and in October 2017, they found that he had developed a 46mm aneurysm on the ascending aorta. He is currently on blood pressure medication to prohibit this aneurysm from getting bigger.”
A paediatric cardiologist performed a Stress ECG to establish the heart rate zones that Nathan can exercise in. Nathan trains with a heart rate monitor and data is sent to his training coach for evaluation. His coach is aware of his medical condition and adjusts the power zones accordingly.
“I really enjoy the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic,” says Nathan. “This year my school friends will also be participating. I will line up for the Half Marathon. I really enjoy the downhills and seeing the finish line. From past experience I can say that the route has lots of climbs and rocky terrain. My MTB achievements since the 2018 FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic include a first place at the 2019 Jackal Dash MTB Race where I rode 40km in a time of 1:25 minutes. I participated at the 2019 Delta Dash MTB six hour endurance challenge in a team of three. We took 2nd place, completing 23 laps. My goal at the 2019 FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic will be to better my 2018 finishing time of 02 hours 01 minute.”
