2022 ROUTE INFORMATION:
STAGE 1:
Distance: 20km
Total Ascent: 300m
Easy to Moderate Technical Route, lots of fun and fast running.
65% single track / 35% Jeep Track
The first 6 km meanders from Van Gaalen Cheese Farm next to the Magalies Berg River mixing open jeep track and single track. This will be flat and fast running, more than enough areas where everyone can juggle for position and get into a nice flowing rhythm. Thereafter you turn towards the Southern slopes of the Magalies Berg Range climbing gradually mainly on Jeep Track for the next 2 km. At the 8 km mark you will encounter the 1st Water Point. After WP 1, you will run next to a game farm and possible see Buffalo and other plains animals. The route will keep on climbing and increase in gradient, until you reach the Baboon trail. From here it will be a tough 1 km section of single track working its way up the Magalies Berg Slope. The Baboon trail is an awesome single track section of indigenous forest, something all competitors can look forward to experience. The total climb is 4,4 km and 220 m of accent. Once at the highest point it is pretty much fast running single track and jeep track to Water Point 2 at 13 km mark. The down hill section is easy to moderate in technicality going in and out of bush tunnels. The down hill section is 2,8 km in distance and total decent is 190 m. Once you reach the Magalies Berg River you be more or less on 15 km and from here on you will run predominantly next to the river on wide open single track routes, their will be more than enough space to pass fellow competitors and all of it will be flat and fast running all the way to the finish.
Summary of Day 1, it will be a great introduction for newbies to trail running to start with and get into the swing of things, the route is at sections tough, but most of it is fast and flowing singletrack.
STAGE 2:
Distance: 16km
Total Ascent: 400m
Moderate to Advance Technical Route, Steep and rocky climbs and downhills the mid-section of the route.
60% single track / 40% Jeep Track
Stage 2 competitors will experience a totally different type of route with a lot more open areas and rocky sections with one big climb going towards the top of the iconic Pofadder Trail. You will start from the venue at Van Gaalen slowly but surely ascending towards the northern slopes the Witwaters Rand Mountain Range. This part of the stage will be mostly jeep track and some single track with more than enough sections to pass fellow competitors. At 4,5 km mark you turn into Concrete track which starts of as a steep and rocky climb until you reach a concrete road (from here on you will keep on climbing all the way to 8,8 km mark, thus the first 8,8 km is all uphill running). After the concrete climb you will be back on a rocky single track that at times kicks up a steep gradient. At the 6,3 km mark you will get some respite with a short downhill until you start to climb again towards Water Point 1 – at 6,8 km mark. After Water Point 1 you will head towards Pofadder trail and the route will get more advanced and technical this section is about 4,7 km long for which your more experience trail runners will have an advantage with loose and technical rocks to negotiate. Especially on the downhill sections. After Water Point 1 you still keep on climbing until the 8,8 km mark. At times you will run on the edge of the mountain, stop if you are not a racing snake and enjoy the panoramic views. The climb is in total 4,3 km long with 300 m of accent. The Pofadder Trail decent is rough, technical and rocky. If you are new to trail running, try and use this section to get some valuable experience on running downhill on rocks…Once at the bottom of the valley floor you get a welcome relief at Water Point 2, at 13 km mark. From here it is all easy, fast and fun running back towards the finish at Van Gaalen (mostly downhill running).
Summary of Day 2: newbies will have a tough 4,7 km mid-section of the stage to negotiate but this will surely set you up for a good learning experience to take on the African X event in Houw Hoek, Western Cape. The rest of the stage is easy to moderate and lots of fun. The final 3 km is super-fast running.
