Glenrose Xaba and Tish Jones will take on their second Totalsports Women’s Race of 2018 on Thursday, 09 August (National Women’s Day) in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively.

Xaba made her Totalsports Women’s Race Durban debut at the end of July this year where she secured gold in an impressive time of 33 minutes 41 seconds.  “I really enjoyed the Durban race, it was exciting,” says Xaba.  “My victory in Durban was really special.  It’s given me the confidence to challenge for bigger honours.  This will be the second time that I take on the Totalsports Women’s Race in Johannesburg.  I love that it’s a ‘women only’ race and am hoping for a good performance on the day.  I always enter a race with the goal to give my best.  If it is good enough for me to win, I will be happy.  There are some really fast ladies here in Gauteng, so the challenge will be tough.”

Other athletes to look out for in Joburg will include:  Maria Shai and Cornelia Joubert to mention just a few.

According to Shai, she made her Totalsports Women’s Race Johannesburg debut in 2017 where she secured the 3rd spot on the podium.  “I enjoy road running because it is challenging,” admits Shai.  “The 2017 Totalsports Women’s Race was a really nice experience.  This year I would like to improve on my result.  I love that this is a ‘women only’ race as it allows women to enjoy their own race and have a lot of fun.  My best time for a 10km race is 35:02 set in PE.  I don’t think that I’ll be able to better this time in Johannesburg though.  My goal is to be in the top 10.”

“I entered the Totalsports Women’s Race to show respect to the women of Johannesburg,” says Joubert.  “The fact that it’s a ‘women only’ race is brilliant.  It’s a lot of fun, while the role that PinkDrive fulfils in the lives of thousands of women is just amazing.  My goal is to improve on my 2017 position.  Winning would be a bonus as there is a really good prize purse to take home.  My PB for a 10km is 33.49 set in 2017.  I am not sure whether I’ll be able to better this time as the route is a bit tough, but I will give it a shot.”

Tish Jones is looking forward to toeing the line at the Totalsports Women’s Race in Cape Town on National Women’s Day.

Fresh off of injury Jones made her Totalsports Women’s Race debut in Durban (end July 2018) where she secured the 3rd spot on the podium.  “I had a wonderful time in Durban,” says Jones.  “There was such a positive atmosphere and sense of community. Everybody was so supportive of one another.  I am really happy with my finishing time and position.  I feel like I must be part of this atmosphere again! It really is wonderful and this is why I want to run in Cape Town.  I am looking forward to seeing the crowds of ladies in pink; laughing, smiling, running, walking and ultimately having a great time whilst raising money and awareness for PinkDrive.  My goal will once again be to enjoy this event and run to the best of my ability on the road to recovery.”

Additional athletes to look out for in Cape Town will include:  Kyla Van Graan, Zintle Xiniwe, Yandiswa Shange and Beetrice Themane.

Attracted by the camaraderie and vibe experienced at South African road running events, Van Graan will celebrate her Totalsports Women’s Race debut in Cape Town this year.  “I love the atmosphere, thousands of people getting up early and coming together to share in the joy of running,” says Van Graan.  “I love a good challenge and look forward to lining up with SA’s best at the Totalsports Women’s Race.  My dad is a cancer survivor thanks to early diagnosis and cancer awareness campaigns. I am therefore so thankful for cancer initiatives such as the Totalsports Women’s Race together with PinkDrive that raise awareness and support families that are currently battling the big C. I also believe that there is nothing in the world more powerful than a group of women standing together.”
