Totalsports Challenge Kleinmond

TOTALSPORTS CHALLENGE

Sometimes life is a team game and sometimes it is up to the individual. Few events will test team and individual strength more than the Totalsports Challenge, possibly the most comprehensive multi-event on the planet.  Annually, on the second weekend of the New Year, Kleinmond hosts the adrenaline pumping Totalsports Challenge presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT and Liberty Medical Scheme.  Kleinmond, the perfect venue for this much anticipated sporting event, is a natural paradise in the heart of the Western Cape, South Africa.

Consisting of 7 disciplines, the Totalsports Challenge tests both skill and endurance of the multi sport athlete. To make the event more accessible, participants can choose between the individual event and a number of team options. Teams assign disciplines to each member and together aim to obtain the best time across all disciplines.  Family, friends and colleagues are encouraged to team up and take on the challenge.  Although entering for fun, there is always a competitive element especially among corporate entries.  To be competitive in the team category it is best to ensure that each member specialise in his/her respective discipline.  However, competing at this event for the first time is an experience on its own.

Whichever format is chosen, the Totalsports Challenge has proven itself to be a favourite on the multi sport calendar!

Both of these challenges ensure that no-one is excluded from the beginning of the year multi sport celebration!

Route Description

Road Bike

The Road Bike route starts in Gordon’s Bay and follows Clarence Drive, one of the premier tourist routes and whale watching areas in South Africa, to Kleinmond. The roadies will pass Kogel Bay, one of the hot surf spots, as well as the famous crayfish village of Rooi Els, before they briefly leave the coast past Pringle Bay to Betty’s Bay. The running leg awaits them at Malherbe Street, the first major street after entering the Kleinmond village.

Riders will experience a smooth surface of which the first 22 km is all but flat. After the Rooi Els hill the road levels out, but also loses the natural mountainous wind protection. A clever time trialist will find himself in a bunch at this point!

Road Run

Road runners will have the streets of Kleinmond to help get into their running stride. After passing the finish area at the Kleinmond main beach they will follow the R44 to get to Arabella. Runners will leave the R44 and encounter a sandy horse trail for the last 2 km on their way to the K1 leg.

Mountain Bike

After the initial scramble to get out of Arabella, mountain bikers will have a 2 km tar stretch before turning left onto the infamous Highlands pass, a 7 km climb on a never ending corrugated surface. The climb is made worthwhile once reaching Tokarra and enters Cape Nature property with its sweeping roads leading down to one of the biggest Protea growing farms in the country. A few technical descents were thrown in to give the real MTB’er a bit of an advantage. The final climb is rewarded with spectacular views of the Kleinmond surroundings and the ocean before dropping down to the finish.
