The ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance, born in 2009, has become one of South Africa’s iconic Trail Races and the biggest Stage Trail Run in the country! From a modest 120 teams in 2009, the event has grown and is now capped at 250 teams!
After spending the first 4 years based in Kleinmond, the ProNutro AfricanX moved to the historic Houw Hoek Inn in 2013! Offering the perfect location for the Race Village with the spectacular Overberg Mountains as a backdrop, runners enjoyed three days of fantastic running through some of the best terrain in the area while being spoilt with beautiful views and newly built trails!
The Race Village at the Houw Hoek Inn proved hugely popular with the delicious food and warm atmosphere on offer, and we look forward to welcoming runners back in March 2014!

Stage 1 of the 2014 ProNutro AfricanX will be the perfect stage for runners to ease into the 3 stage race! Taking the best sections of the 2013 Day 1 and Day 3 routes and combining them in 2014 will ensure an even more exciting Stage 1! Starting and finishing at the Houw Hoek Inn runners will enjoy a varied mix of terrain which includes some steep technical climbs, horse trails, jeep track and awesome single tracks! Runners can expect as much diversity in the scenery, as the route takes them through vineyards, orchards, forests, fynbos, over dam walls and offers spectacular views of the Groenlandberg mountain range.
The stage starts with a climb out of Houw Hoek which will spread out the field before reaching the first singletrack of the day. Runners will continue to the first waterpoint at Thandi via a more direct route along some fun single track. Runners should be sure to stock up on nutrition here as the 5km to the 2nd waterpoint consists mainly of climbing!
The 2nd waterpoint at the Paul Cluver amphitheatre is a welcome reward for runners and is also a spectator point. The section that follows on the Paul Cluver estate includes some new single track sections that are sure to keep the adrenaline levels high! These will lead runners to the 3rd waterpoint situated alongside the picturesque dam.
From waterpoint 3, the route will connect with Stage 3 of the 2013 event, taking runners up the slopes of the Groenlandberg before joining a contour which traverses the range towards the Houw Hoek Inn.
After descending, runners will rejoin the 2013 Stage 1 route with a final steep climb which will join the singletracks providing stunning views of the Houw Hoek Inn and take runners down to the finish line!
Look out for Stage 2 and 3 Route Announcements coming soon!
Total Distance: 34km Total Ascent: 1100m Waterpoints: 3 (8km; 18km; 26km) Start Venue: Ongegund Lodge, Sir Lowry’s Pass Village Finish Venue: Paul Cluver Amphitheatre
The AfricanX Team believe that the 2014 Stage 2 will be the best stage in the history of the AfricanX and will consist of 80% single track!
Starting at Ongegund Lodge, the route follows a more direct route to connect with the infamous Gantouw Pass! The ascent to the top of the Gantouw is a special one, be sure to look out for the original wagon wheel tracks and take some time to enjoy the awesome views from the top! Runners will be greeted with a Waterpoint on the top for that much needed replenishment!
From Waterpoint 1, runners will have a lot of fun in the single tracks and pine forests of the Grabouw area as the route descends to the Eikenhof Dam and WP2 at 16km. These 8km’s will be the perfect way to recover from the first big climb of the day, before meeting the 2nd!
The section from WP2 at the Grabouw Country Club to the finish at Paul Cluver consists of some of the most spectacular single track you will find in the area! A climb will take runners to the base of the Groenlandberg past some beautiful apple orchards. The route flattens out for awhile where runners will enjoy some free flowing single track before meeting another climb which will take runners to WP3 and the highest point of the day at the 28km mark. The views along this section are unbeatable as you run through endless fynbos and look over the farms (including Oak Valley) below. Look out for the canal which runs parallel to the course, this is some of the freshest water you will find on the mountain… we call it the longest waterpoint in history- 1.5km of it!
Soon after the highest point of the day, runners will turn right which will start the descent down to the finish line at Paul Cluver. Around 5.5km of open, downhill running will take runners down through Paul Cluver Estate and to the finish line at the Paul Cluver Amphitheatre. Make sure you save some legs for this section!
